I didn’t plan or even want to take out loans in order to go to art school. I wanted to go to The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and it was the only way I could pay for it. Thinking about having to go into debt for art school seems crazy to me now. Far different then for Medical school or to obtain a law degree. I really had no idea how I was going to pay it off after graduation. The art work I made after was almost exclusively about debt. I was not a lot of work made because I was working full time in a cabinet shop in Brooklyn in order to live and pay off this loan. There were definitely times when I could make the monthly payment, forbearance a few times. I kept a written ledger for my progress and was anxious when I saw the balance drop little after a payment due to the interest. I got my monthly payments in order and with some help was able to pay them off completely, I was lucky. Not having that weight on my mind every paycheck was a relief of stress that was the greatest gift. I know how much others suffer under these loans. Now more than ever.
